A Pediatrician in the Making

 My Future Career

Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be a doctor. It all started at the age of five on New Year's Eve. My mom had to call the ambulance because my dad was not feeling well. At first, we thought it was not something terrible. Then the horror began! My poor dad had a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, so we spent New Year's Day at the hospital. He got his treatment and we went back home thinking everything was back in order. But, unfortunately, it happened a second time and even a third time. I almost lost my dad three times because he had three meningitis. It was a challenging period for my family, and my dad suffered a lot. I remember massaging him every night to help him with his neck pain. It was at this moment that I had realized I wanted to be a doctor. In fact, I wanted to be a doctor to help my dad because still, to this day, he has pain sometimes. Surely, my mind had changed a bit from when I started primary school; I wanted to be a teacher or a veterinarian because we all say that at some point in our life. Finally, my choice stopped at being a doctor but, more specifically, a pediatrician. I know I wanted to be a doctor for my dad, but I changed my mind when I started working with children at the summer camp. In fact, I realized I wanted to work in health but with children too, so that is why I decided to be a doctor but for kids. Being a pediatrician has been my choice for six years now, and I have not changed my mind yet.

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to take care of babies and everybody said that I was very good with them. I even saved a little boy from drowning when I was in primary school. So, I think I have the ability to work with children.

Furthermore, this profession fits me because I have always wanted to help people and make their days better. This job will be an occasion to help families by treating their kids. Seeing the happiness in the parents' faces afterward is why I want to do this job. I would also like to guide parents on how to take care of their first baby because that is not always easy. Knowing that I can make a difference is something that excites me. I know there will not always be a good ending, but that is part of every job. It will not constantly be easy but, in the end, I will somehow make a change in someone's life, and that is why this job is inspiring for me.

I want to have an office with my regular patients in order to build a great relationship with them. I do not want them to be my patients and me, the doctor. I want us to be a whole. In brief, I want to be a support for the child and even for the parents.

  3. Noémie, your blog post is beautiful! I can see the passion that you have for your field of study and for children in general. I especially love these two sentences, as they mean the world to me and think that all doctors should have a similar mindset: "I want us to be a whole. In brief, I want to be a support for the child and even for the parents."
Personal story of mine. I might have shared it with you, I do not remember. My boyfriend also had bacterial meningitis this year, in January; he almost died. The doctor said that if I had brought my sweetie a few minutes later, he would not be alive today. He ended up spending 3 weeks at the hospital, 2 days under the respirator, and remembers nothing from the first week and a half! Thank you so much for sharing this story with us. These dark moments push us towards being the fierce, empathic and determined women we are today!

    - verb tense form (I always wanted to be a doctor): perfect tense with 'since'
    - preposition (during): five during New Year's Eve.
    - word choice: he did three meningitis - he had meningitis three times
    - remove 'a' before 'doctor' and 'pediatrician': Finally, my choice stopped at a doctor but, more specifically, a pediatrician.
    - verb tense: In fact, I realize (past tense)
    - verb tense (use the present perfect): A pediatrician is my choice for six years now
    - word choice: change 'a' to 'being': A pediatrician is my choice for six years now
    - verb tense: use the simple past instead of the past progressive: everybody was saying
    - verb tense, use the perfect tense: I always wanted to help people
    - remove 'the': I would also like to guide the parents
    - word choice (have): I know there will not always have a good ending
    - plural (patient): my regular patient
